Five quick tips that will improve your leadership skills

1: Control your ego

2: Learn to listen

3: Hold yourself accountable

4: Get to know your people well

5: Put their needs first

1: Control your ego

Leaders can have power, control, authority.

Leaders should have experience, knowledge, expertise.

Leaders might earn more, have more, get more.

That’s all fine, but this doesn’t automatically give leaders respect, or credibility. To be a great leader you have to earn that – from others – so leave your ego at the door!

2: Learn to listen

Effective communication is an essential component of leadership, but don’t be tricked into thinking that you need to do all the talking.

Leaders need to learn to listen, and listen well.

Trust in the skills, ability and ideas of others, and let them speak freely. It is amazing how much, as a leader, we can learn by listening to others.

3: Hold yourself accountable

As a leader, you are obliged to be the best you can be, so others can be the best they can be.

Leaders hold other people accountable for their actions, and so they should. Great leaders also hold themselves accountable for the actions of others and accept the blame when things don’t go well.

When the performance of others falls short, ask yourself this question, “As a leader, what could I have done differently to have positively influenced that outcome?”

4: Get to know your people well

Your role as a leader is all about training, developing and educating others and you can only achieve this by developing a true understanding of:

•    what motivates them
•    what their aspirations are
•    what they are capable of
•    what is important to them

5: Put their needs first

Leadership isn’t about telling people what to do. Leadership is about:

•    showing them what to do
•    teaching them how to do it
•    developing each person, enabling them to fulfil their potential
•    focusing on the interests and wellbeing of others
•    helping people to improve and achieve results
•    building relationships based on mutual respect and understanding

Leadership is about being the best we can be to help others be the best they can be.

Leadership Quote:

"I must follow the people. Am I not their leader?"

... Benjamin Disraeli.
