Module 2 Managing Yourself
Unit 1.1 - Professional Credibility

Page 3/6

By professional credibility we mean how trustworthy, reliable and competent our colleagues, employees, managers and clients consider us to be – the level of confidence other people have in us to do our job well, and to do it with integrity.

Credibility is not something we simply acquire through our job title, nor is it gained by telling people who and what we are. Credibility is one of the most challenging personal characteristics to have as it must be earned from the people we know and influence.

The Y-Model.

Fig 2-2: The Y-Model

People’s judgement of our credibility is based primarily on how we conduct ourselves, which is an external representation of our competence and integrity.

The Y-Model depicts the three components of managing ourselves and the relationship between them. It is essential for us to understand these components if we are to maximise our professional credibility:

  • Integrity: We have high standards, principles and values that we refuse to compromise
  • Competence: Our ability to perform the tasks that are required in our role
  • Conduct: Our actions that display our integrity and competence (or lack thereof) to others

Self Awareness

Self awareness is the change agent for enhancing our credibility: if we are aware of our integrity and competence we can change our conduct and have a positive impact on our credibility.

Self awareness of integrity and credibility enables us to change our conduct.

If we want to change our conduct we first need to be aware of our integrity and competence.

To maximise our professional credibility we need to maintain our integrity and maximise our competence, and having a high level of self awareness can help us to achieve this.

Consider This: Your Professional Credibility
  • Do you believe you are credible in your profession?
  • Do you feel that you are well respected in the workplace?
  • What makes you think this?
  • What evidence do you have that supports your beliefs?
